MESSAGE FROM NBA CHIEF POLICY ADVISOR ALICIA HUGHES AND THE POLICY & PROGRAMMING TEAM

Dear Colleague:

I am privileged to lead an extraordinary team brilliant legal minds and dedicated public servants to facilitate the NBA's robust and unified policy, programming, scholarly, and outreach efforts. Working in concert with the NBA Standing Committee on Legislation, our team is organized into divisions: a Legislative Council, which I co-chair with Plainfield, New Jersey City Council President Steve Hockaday, Programming, which is led by Region III Director Nilaja Ford, and the NBA Journal on Critical Race Issues, where Lora Spencer is our Executive Editor. We are all coordinated by an extraordinary NBA Presidential Fellow for Policy, Jasmeene Burton-Martin. You can learn more about us, our national programmatic platform and legislative agenda here - www.nationalbar.org/policy. The NBA Board of Governors approved the legislative agenda on November 2, and we are eager to get to work!

Unfortunately, from a legislative perspective, with 36 governorships up for election in 2022 and unimaginably horrendous voting reform bills passing in state legislatures across the country that compromise access to the ballot box and the true meaning behind "One Man, One Vote, in great part due to unfortunate holdings in the U.S. Supreme Court cases Brnovich v. Democratic National Committee, et. al., 141 S. Ct. 2321 (2021) and Shelby County v. Holder (12-96 Shelby County v. Holder (06/25/2013) (supremecourt.gov), time isn't on our side. Understanding the "fierce urgency of now," we are mounting an offense to insist on swift passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Act in the U.S. Senate to ensure that as lawyers, we have the tools we need to hold the line and STAND UP on behalf of millions of disenfranchised voters across America. We are traveling to D.C. to lobby in January, and we need YOU with us.  Details follow shortly.

Please join my team for  a policy and programming overview, panel discussion on current election protection lawsuits in our country, and a voting rights lobby training on November 18 in preparation for our first 2022 lobby day in January 2022. Please RSVP/register by submitting the form below. We have been working diligently to put together a program and legislative agenda that will support President Moore's platform, including for election protection, while providing opportunities for vertical and horizontal integration across our organization, and this integrated vision includes you!

We want every chapter, section, division, and region hosting activities and events consistent with our national program/platform. We are here as a support and in addition to taking the lead on our national program, with collaborative partnerships, and providing meaningful programs for our member and the community benefit, we are happy to recommend experts when asked, and to assist in the structure of your meaningful events that support STAND UP NBA and benefit local communities. We want to know what you’re doing and most importantly, we want to help.

If needed, be in touch with us electronically at policy@nationalbar.org and remember, STAND UP!

With Warmest Regards,

Alicia Hughes
